Dean is a patent and trademark agent.  He is also a barrister and solicitor in BC, Canada, entitled to practice before the USPTO in trademark matters for Canadian clients, and is a non-practising member of the Law Society of England and Wales.  Dean’s practice focuses on patent drafting, patent and trademark prosecution and international strategic intellectual property portfolio issues.  His practice encompasses the international acquisition, protection, commercial exploitation, and enforcement of intellectual property (patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs, and trade secrets).

Originally from New Zealand, Dean received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University and a Law degree from the University of British Columbia.  Dean speaks and writes French and attended French Immersion programs at Université Quebec and Université Laval.  He also spent six months in France studying Intellectual Property and European Community law.

Dean was awarded the Marie F. Morency Memorial Prize for the highest results in the Patent Drafting Exam in 2000 and a scholarship with the International Bar Association, which took him to Spain and South Africa to study intellectual property in a conference setting.

Dean teaches in the School of Business and the Engineering Department at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and has taught Patent Law and IP Commercialization at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law.  He delivers regular seminars and webinars to businesses and trade organizations.

Prior to founding the IP boutique firm that is Palmer IP, Dean was an associate at a large Vancouver law firm where he embarked on his career in IP.

Dean enjoys mountain biking, motorcycling, sailing and tennis in his spare time.
